S.Comm Strengthens Technology Ambitions Through New Brand Identity

S.Comm Unveils Strategic Rebranding to Drive Technology Expansion

KOTA KINABALU: SEDCO Communications Sdn Bhd (S.Comm), a subsidiary of the Sabah Economic Development Corporation (SEDCO), has embarked on a major corporate rebranding exercise as part of its transformation and renewed vision to expand its business portfolio.

SEDCO Group Chairman Datuk Masiung Banah said the rebranding initiative was aimed at increasing public awareness of S.Comm’s capabilities and potential while strengthening the company’s competitiveness and contribution to Sabah’s economy.

He said S.Comm would expand beyond its traditional telecommunications business into emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI), smart infrastructure, green technology and digital transformation solutions to meet the evolving needs of the public and industry.

Masiung noted that many people were unaware that SEDCO owned a telecommunications-focused subsidiary, as the public was generally more familiar with other established technology brands in Sabah.

“Therefore, I instructed S.Comm to undertake a comprehensive rebranding exercise so that the public will recognise it as one of SEDCO’s key subsidiaries and as a company poised to play a greater role in Sabah’s future development.

“The transformation is supported by a new management and administrative team, together with a renewed vision, strategic initiatives and clear objectives to drive the company forward.

“Ultimately, I want S.Comm to emerge as Sabah’s leading technology company and make a significant contribution to the State’s economy,” he said.

Masiung said this to reporters after officiating the launch of S.Comm’s corporate transformation and rebranding initiative at its office in KK Times Square on Friday.

Also present were SEDCO Group General Manager AR. Datuk James Wong Kein Peng, S.Comm Vice-Chairman Ts Ismail Awang, Executive Director Subha Maraiah and International Director Dato Sri Mossco Woo.

Masiung said the rebranding exercise would enhance S.Comm’s visibility while providing a stronger platform to showcase its products and services to government agencies, businesses and the wider community.

He added that S.Comm would continue exploring emerging technologies in line with industry developments while ensuring that technological innovations translated into more affordable and accessible solutions for consumers.

“Technology is evolving rapidly, and companies are constantly competing to provide better and more efficient solutions.

“Our objective is not only to introduce new technologies but also to ensure that the cost of accessing and using these services becomes more affordable for the public,” he said.

Meanwhile, Subha said S.Comm was repositioning itself to keep pace with rapid technological advancements, create new revenue streams and strengthen Sabah’s digital ecosystem.

He said the company was also establishing strategic partnerships with technology firms in China to facilitate knowledge and technology transfer instead of relying solely on imported expertise.

“We are not inviting them to come here and take over our operations. Instead, they are sharing their knowledge and technology with us so that local talent can acquire the necessary skills and capabilities.

“This approach will create long-term value, develop local expertise and generate new revenue opportunities for Sabah,” he said.

As part of its innovation agenda, Subha said S.Comm had developed a smart metering solution that integrates fibre-optic connectivity with SIM card technology, providing a more cost-effective alternative to conventional wireless smart meter systems.

He said Cosmos, a shareholder company of S.Comm, had secured its first contract from Sabah Electricity through a collaboration with Celcom Timur Sabah to deploy the smart metering system.

Unlike conventional systems that require manual meter readings, the new solution enables electricity consumption data to be transmitted automatically to a centralised monitoring platform.

The system is expected to improve operational efficiency, enhance the accuracy of data collection and reduce the need for manual intervention.

Subha said the same technology could also be adapted for use by water utility providers, enabling the remote monitoring and collection of water consumption data.

“We are constantly exploring innovative products and solutions that can reduce costs, improve operational efficiency and create new revenue opportunities.

“Smart metering is one such solution, and the technology can also be replicated and adapted for water services,” he said.

Masiung expressed hope that S.Comm would continue to grow and remain at the forefront of technological development by introducing innovations that keep pace with changing industry trends.

He said that while SEDCO and S.Comm were committed to developing and introducing new technologies for the benefit of the community, they would also ensure that such innovations helped reduce the financial burden on consumers.

In a related development, Masiung called on the chief executive officers of all SEDCO subsidiaries to adopt a more proactive and aggressive approach in promoting and expanding their respective businesses.

“When SEDCO’s subsidiaries grow and generate higher revenue, they will be in a stronger position to pay higher dividends to SEDCO.

“This will subsequently enable SEDCO to contribute greater dividends to the Sabah State Government for the benefit of the people,” he said.
